Youth Mentoring Program

HCI's Peer Mentoring is a valuable tool in enhancing the lives of youth with disabilities ages 14-24. Through regular interaction with their peers, monthly group activities provide opportunities for teens and young adults with disabilities to gain in social skills and grow in self-esteem. These activities include opportunities for community volunteerism, cultural events, leadership training and overall fun-filled days. Ingage youth as partners in their own development, the well-being of other youth, and the development of their communities

Program Goals:

Engage youth as partners in their own development, the well-being of other youth, and the development of their communities

Promote constructive and encouraging relationships among youth and adults and youth and their peers.

Through an array of youth development opportunities, provide for youth to build competencies in areas such as independence, generosity, and a sense of well-being.

Encourage and support the personal goals of youth for improved educational and career outcomes

Inspire youth to develop their talents and abilities by means of adult role model who has encountered similar frustrations and experienced success.

For Youth:
Adolescence is a time of growth, often accompanied by insecurity and apprehension: a time for youth to experiment and discover their unique talents, abilities and social skills. This exciting but stressful period is heightened when the young person has a disability. The example of a concerned adult friend can give invaluable motivation and encouragement to youth.

For Parents:
Parents of youth with disabilities benefit from peer mentoring as well. Through involvement with the mentoring group, parents see that their child has much to look forward to and strive for in the future.

Foster a Partnership:
Don't Have the time to volunteer? Foster a partnership is for individuals who do not have the time to become a volunteer but may have financial resources to support a match. This is an opportunity to contribute to the lives of children through financial support. The average cost in 'fostering a partnership' is approximately $25 a month/$250 a year.
