SPECIAL OLYMPICS

What a wonderful spring day for such an event. There were approximately athletes and 150 volunteers. Mike Lewis, Sheriff of Wicomico County for was our Honorary Chairman with Steve Hammond from WBOC as our emcee. Thanks to Team Holly more than $11,000 was raised to support this event.

SPRING FESTIVAL RECAP

Thanks to all our volunteers, sponsors, & patrons who helped with our annual Spring Festival at Holly Center. It was a rainy day but everyone seemed to have a good time.

DAILY POINTS OF LIGHT AWARD

Congratulations to Jack Lewis, Volunteer of the Year for HCI, for receiving the Daily Points of Light Award presented by Tylor Patton from Barbara Mikulski’s office. In addition, Mr. Lewis was presented a proclamation from Wicomico County by John Cannon, President of Wicomico County Council.

WICOMICO COUNTY PRESCRIPTION DISCOUNT CARD
Available at the Health Department or at HCI, these cards are free and you can receive an average of 20% on your prescription medicine. Most pharmacies accept them. If you are aware of any other counties that use them, please give HCI a call, 443-260-0822.

LET’S GO GREEN & SAVE ENERGY

Swap out your light bulbs. Today’s compact fluorescent light bulbs use 75% less energy than standard incandescent bulbs & last up to 10 times longer. Each bulb you replace can save $30 or more in electricity costs over the bulb’s lifetime.

FUNDING FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING

Beginning 7-1-08, the Eastern Shore Center for Independent Living has been awarded the Independent Living Contract by the Division of Rehabilitation Services. This will be a new resource for individuals with disabilities who need funding to assist in their independent living goals. It should be noted the funding provided through ESCIL is to be considered funding of last resort. For more information, contact the Eastern Shore Center for Independent Living at 1-800-705-7944.

SCOTLAND/IRELAND

The “turkey” has been traveling again – this time to Scotland/Ireland. Two beautiful countries – Edinburgh Castle, the Highlands and the Book of Kells in Dublin were some of the highlights. HCI is sponsoring a raffle with a limited 2000 tickets to be sold. Each ticket will be sold at a price of $50.00. The drawing will be held on 11-22-08 during our annual Basket Bingo. RESOURCE HANDBOOK

HCI is seeking resources (things, people, agencies) for individuals with disabilities to improve and enhance their independent living. Your help is needed in compiling such resources into a handbook that we can later share with you. If you have any suggestions, please call Janet Parke, 410-572-6273.

DIGITAL TV

On February 17, 2009 all full-power broadcast television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting on analog airwaves & begin broadcasting only in digital.
